What are the search and rescue priorities?(list 9)
1- The IC shall ensure Search and Rescue is carried out with the areas posing the greatest threat to life being the priority.
2- Other areas to be searched in the following priority may include:
a) suite of origin
b) fire floor hallway
c) adjacent suites to the suite of origin
d) the suite(s) immediately above the suite of origin
e) the remainder of the suites on the fire floor
f) all stairwells in their entirety
g) the floor immediately below the fire floor
h) other affected areas of the building
Note: the priority of the areas searched may be adapted due to exposure to smoke and fire.
First Alarm responsibilities at a High Rise Fire (list 8)
- determine the incident location and particulars by speaking with on-duty building employees and by referring to the fire annunciator panel where available.
- access security key-box, taking needed keys and leaving other keys with a trustworthy person (app. Driver)
- establish a Lobby Sector
- deliver an initial message to tenants/occupants, where lobby voice controls are available
- secure elevators to the ground floor, where controls are available
- assign an elevator operator, who may double as the Entry Control Person during initial operations
- bring a high-rise kit for potential operations
- where fire is suspected, the driver closest to the standpipe/sprinkler connection should connect dry lines from the apparatus the theses connections. Then await direction from the IC to charge the lines.
What may the Lobby (tactical area) be used for? (List 8)
- establishing a building control/communication centre, if properly equipped(lobby sector)
- instruction to tenants/occupants, if properly equipped
- monitoring of incident progress
- an initial assembly/staging area for crews, supplies and equipment
- a staging area for other agencies
- a medical triage area
- a crew rehab area
- a distribution point for evacuation
The tactical area “Forward Staging Area” is located ___________ and may used for ?(list 5)

- ensure the tactics do not compromise building protection devices

- ensure that evacuation of occupants is controlled and that evacuation routes are separate from emergency operations and smoke control
When will additional alarms be initiated?(4)
Additional alarm responses shall be initiated at the discretion of the IC.
Consideration should be given to additional alarms when out is obvious that the fire is progressing to the point where it has potential to:
- further endanger the life and safety of persons in the building
- spread horizontally on the fire floor or vertically in the building interior
- break out to the building exterior with subsequent exposure threats
Where annunciator panels show multiple indications________?
Floors shall be checked in order, from the floor closest to the ground, then proceed up.
Should personnel determine that it is safe to use an elevator, _________?
….. They shall use the designated elevator(where equipped) and shall proceed no higher than two floors below alarm/fire.
If no problem is found on the alarm/fire floor _______?
Check the floors below and above. If considered safe to do so, consider silencing the alarm to improve communications and to reduce the inconvenience to occupants.

- mechanical ventilation shutdown
- building smoke control
- release of automatic door closures and exit door locks
- fire telephones in operation

Explain the use of fire floor hose cabinets?
Where possible, use the fire floor hose cabinets so as not to prop open the stairwell doors. Suite door closures should not be compromised where possible.
