What is the purpose of the Emergency Care with Pandemic SOG?
To provide personnel with guidelines to protect against exposure to infectious diseases prior to and during emergency medical responses.
What is Pandemic PPE?
shall include tyvek suit, double nitrile gloves, N95 mask, face shield, firefighting boots, and any other PPE specified by current medical bulletin.
Prior to Emergency Medical response personnel should what?
1-Regularily practice proper hand-washing technique sing soap and water or proper use of alcohol based hand-sanitizer when soap and water are not available
2-Ensure that a contaminated waste receptacle is located in the station apparatus bay.
During Medical response what are the procedures to prevent spread of infectious diseases?
1-All personnel shall have Nitrile Gloves, N95 masks and eye protection available for immediate use at all medical responses. Additionally medical gowns, tyvek suits, and face shields shall be available if required.
2-Personnel with broken skin in the face should wear a face shield in lieu of safety glasses or googles
3-Non-essential personnel should not be in the area where patient care is being provided including during the transport phase of the response.
4-Prior to patient contact, it may be determined that a more appropriate level of PPE may be required. If so, ensure the donning of the appropriate level of PPE before making patient contact
5-Notify additional resources such as EMS and Police of any potential hazards to allow them to don appropriate PE and limit persons exposed to the patient and scene.
During Patient Care, what is the required procedure to limit exposure?
1-If possible, from 1-1.5m ask the patient if they have a cough or a fever. If so, then N95, gloves and eye protection shall be worn.
2-At any time during the response personnel shall reconsider their level of PPE and upgrade if they feel it is warranted or when directed to by the Captain.
3-Personnel providing patient care in an ambulance shall ensure PPE is worn
Procedure for devon post patient care?
1-Prior to personnel and equipment boarding the apparatus, the driver shall provide alcohol based sanitizer for the cleaning and decon of personnel and equipment disinfecting wipes and/or spray for the cleaning and decon of non-disposable medical equipment.
2-The driver shall provide waste disposal bags to double-bag disposable medical equipment.
3-Prior to being placed on the apparatus, non-disposable medical equipment that may have been contaminated, shall be decontaminated using disinfecting wipes and/or spray provided and allowed to air dry. Should a more thorough decontamination be required refer to SOG 26-04. In extreme cases the Medical Training Officer or alternate shall be contacted and shall provide direction on decontamination and/or retirement of the equipment in question.
4-Any non-disposable PPE contaminated with bio-hazardous material must be cared for as per SOG 26-04
5-If required any personnel contaminated on scene shall follow SOG 26-01 & SOG 2607 prior to boarding the apparatus
6-Waste disposal bags containing contaminated material must be transported back to station in an apparatus compartment other than the personnel cab
7-Upon returning to station, dispose of waste disposal bags in the waste receptacle provide. If amount or size of waste does not allow for disposal in the waste receptacle, place it beside the receptacle, and notify A&M to procure pick-up by the waste disposal company.
8-Wash hands using soap and warm water before entering the living quarters of the station. If personnel wear rings, they must be disinfected as part of the equipment.
9-Personnel that have experienced a significant exposure shall refer to SOG 8-08
What is the normal Pandemic Response when EMS has already arrived?
If an ambulance is on scene prior, the captain shall determine if any assistance is required. Only personnel required by ambulance shall attend the potentially infectious area keeping personnel and equipment exposure to a minimum. Personnel shall use Pandemic PPE.
What is the normal Pandemic Response when EMS has not arrived?
When apparatus arriving prior to ambulance, the Captain shall ensure personnel having contact with the patient shall be limited to 2 people, unless additional assistance is required. All personnel participating in any aspect of patient care, equipment handling or info gathering shall use Pandemic PPE —- Precautions shall be taken to prevent contamination of non-disposable medical equipment.
