Driver responsibilities when backing up an apparatus?

A
  • Avoid Backing up whenever possible. Plan ahead when parking, so backing-up is not necessary
  • Where backing-up is unavoidable, use firefighters who move with the vehicle, and use the vehicle as shielding as much as possible.
  • Where firefighters are unavailable, drivers should dismount and walk completely around the vehicle, before backing-up, to ensure there are no unseen obstacles behind the apparatus

Backing-up of tankers during water shuttle operations consider the following.

A

1-When possible, dump chutes should be positioned for dumping prior to the final backing to the Port-a-tank
2-A water Supply officer should be assigned to control the movement of tankers and keep firefighters clear of tankers when backing up.
3-High visibility traffic vests should be used by firefighters assigned to direct tankers and/or operate filling or dumping operations. Bring apparatus to a complete stop and activate 4 way warning lights
4-Roll window down completely. use 2 spotters if available (1 at driver rear corner and the other passenger front corner if possible)
5-Make verbal communication with the spotter
6-Ensure a spotter is in place 8-10 feet at the left rear of the unit IF YOU CANNOT HEAR THE SPOTTER DO NOT BACK UP
7-To be able to see the spotter in the left rear view mirror view mirror at all times IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE SPOTTER DO NOT BACK UP
8-Driver must have a thorough knowledge of hand signals
9-The spotter must use hand signals to back up the driver

Spotter responsibilities

A

1-Get off apparatus and survey the right side and rear area for obstacles that would damage the apparatus
REMEMBER OVERHEAD CLEARANCE
2-Place yourself 8-10 ft tot he left of the apparatus
3-Make sure the driver can see and hear you
4-Be familiar with hand signals before allowing backing manoeuvres to begin
5-Have eye contact with the driver at all times through the left side rear view mirror and direct with approved hand signals
6-Allow extra room for the swing factor and do not allow the truck to be backed in close to any stationary objects
