A

1- By personnel who are lost, trapped or in trouble.
2- By an Incident Commander, Sector Officer, or anyone who cannot account for individuals.
3- By any personnel who witnessed and/or has first-hand knowledge that other personnel are lost, trapped or in trouble.

List the sequence events when calling a Mayday (list )

A

1- An emergency tone will be heard in the Comm Centre and only in the Comm Centre. As no tones or alarms will be audible to other radio users at the scene, the initiator will not assume other personnel on scene are aware of this initiation at the outset.
2- The initiator will have on scene priority for the operations channel and an open microphone on that channel for ten seconds. If more time is required, the initiator may key the microphone.
3- Use the term Mayday three times by signalling “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday” over the radio or by voice.
4- Describe the situation including identifying your name, your location, what the problem is and what you are doing, i.e. looking for an exit, awaiting rescue, etc. the acronym LUNAR may be used.
5- Continue this message until the IC acknowledges
6- Personnel should note that the emergency button does not work in talk around mode.
7- After the message has been sent and received, manually activate the PASS alarm
8- Leave PASS alarm on until located by rescuers.
9- In the event that you need to communicate critical info, deactivate the PAS alarm until the message has been sent and received and then reactivate the PASS alarm
10- A lost Firefighter should make attempts to exit the structure
11- Find a wall and use the wall to find an exit (left/right hand search)
12- if necessary breech a wall for escape or to access breathable air. Ensure the new location is safe

What is the procedure for a FF with a mayday and lost or not working radio? (list 3)

A

1- Where possible, personnel in distress shall activate their PASS alarm in full alarm mode until reached by a rescuer
2- Lost personnel should attempt a self-rescue
3- The partner of a firefighter in distress shall, if unable to communicate by radio, activate the downed firefighters pass alarm in full-alarm mode, then attempt to contact any other personnel in the hot zone that has a radio and inform the IC using the Mayday protocol.

What is the procedure for an Accidental Orange Button Activation? (List 5)

A

1- If the activation is accidental, personnel should state, “the is Portable_______ with an accidental emergency button activation.
2- Fire Control shall acknowledge and shall initiate the reset procedure
3- Personnel that initiated the emergency shall reset the radio by pushing and holding the emergency button until the radio indicates it has reset.
4- Personnel shall not turn off the radio
5- personnel shall then report to Fire Control that the radio has been reset and Fire Control shall then reset the emergency indicator on the console.

List the IC responsibilities during a Mayday situation.(list 10)

A

1- Ensure that all Mayday messages are acknowledges and confirmed as an actual Mayday situation.
2- Consider the need for additional resources, i.e. upgrade the alarm, additional RITs, etc.
3- Confirm the location, identification and situation of the personnel making the Mayday request
4- The IC may request emergency alert tones from Fire Control at any time to enhance the transmission of priority messages
5- At an appropriate time, conduct a PAR, starting with personnel in the immediate area of the problem
6- To enhance communications, the IC should choose one of the following two radio options
——a) All personnel not immediately involved with RIT operations are directed to limit radio traffic to essential info only
——b) -IC shall request another operating channel from Fire Control
-The lost/trapped FF(s), RIT(s) and other rescue crews shall remain on the original channel
-Other personnel shall be re-assigned to the new channel
-Fire Control or the ECP/Accountability Officer may perform a brief radio check of personnel assigned to the new channel
7- Ensure that crews working on the fire ground continue their assigned task, if not directly assigned to the Mayday effort.
8- Brief and deploy the RIT and assign an additional RIT for backup
9- Assign EMS personnel to the entry point or at a safe location outside of the hot zone.
10- Notify Fire Control to announce the conclusion of the Mayday event.

A

1- Maintain current assignments as ordered by the IC within the incident action plan.
2- Whenever a Mayday request is received, all communications on that channel are to be cease and only communications between the FF initiating the emergency, the IC, RIT personnel and Fire Control are permitted.
3- Conduct a PAR within the sector
4- Notify the IC via radio in the event of a Mayday

List Communications responsibility during a Mayday situation.(list 7)

A

1- After an orange button activation and no transmission is received, Fire Control shall attempt twice to contact the initiator. If there is no response, Fire Control shall notify the IC of the activation as well as the portable “alias”, ID number and any other info available.
2- Peel Regional Police and ambulance shall be dispatch, if not already en route or on scene.
3- Should the IC be the unit initiating the emergency button activation and/or the IC does not respond to Fire Control, they shall attempt to contact another officer on the scene to confirm the details of the emergency situation.
4- In the event Fire Control is unable to make radio contact with any on scene officer, Fire Control shall immediately dispatch another apparatus, DC, PRP and ambulance
5- The IC may stand down an emergency activation situation at their discretion and request a radio rest. At this time, the radio that initiated the emergency must be reset using the normal rest procedure
6- If Fire Control hears a Mayday that is not immediately acknowledged by the IC, it is their responsibility to notify the IC and as necessary assist with the following actions
–Announce over all channels operating at the emergency incident that a Mayday has been received
–Accompany this announcement with the alert tones
–Contact the IC to ensure they are aware of the Mayday situation
7- Continuously monitor the Mayday channel.
