Who determines if PPV is appropriate.
The IC in consultation with the Ventilation Sector Officer will determine if PPV is appropriate and ensure all personnel are informed.
The Ventilation Sector Officer will
- Ensure the the PPV is adequately monitored and performed safely
- Must control the opening of the exit and entry points and must have adequate communication with the fan operator and the exit person(communication ideally made face-face)
Placement of the fan?
During fire operations, the PPV fan should be placed on the unburned side of the fire.
When can the fan be turned on?
The PPV shall not be turned on until personnel are ready to make entry with a charged line, and an exit opening has been made.
The exit opening location?
The ventilation exit opening should ideally be located as close to the fire as possible. (PPE and SCBA shall be worn)
Effects of PPV and Adverse conditions
The IC should contact interior personnel to determine the effects of PPV. Adverse conditions resulting from PPV should be reported immediately to the IC.
PPV is not recommended under the following conditions.
1-Potential for backdraft
2-Potential that ventilation may suspend combustible dust.
3-Potential of an explosive environment
4-Defensive exterior attack
5-Attic Fire
6-When the fire has broken through the wall interior cladding. i.e. drywall, panelling, lath and plaster, and involves the structure itself.
