Specialized Cleaning shall be performed when…
….an article of PPE is contaminated with biohazards or hazardous materials such as body fluids, chemicals, fuel, hazardous compound or any substances that are capable of creating harm or damaging the garment.

When PPE is confirmed contaminated and being sent for specialized cleaning the employee shall…..
1-immediatley report the incident to his or her supervisor.
2-supervisor shall examine the extent of contamination for reporting purposes
3-employee shall wear protective items including, gloves and safety glasses when handling soiled articles
4-ensure- all pockets are emptied and any attached accessories are removed - suspenders and DRD are removed front he ensemble
5-outer shell and liners in separate clear plastic bags(securely closed)
6-if biohazardous material, clear bags should be placed in red bio bags…. non-biohazardous the item shall be placed in a second clear plastic bag
7-complete the red contamination label notifying others that the gear is contaminated. - on the label- the Name of the firefighter the gear belongs to – specify what the suspected contaminates are —- label shall be placed between the first and second bag
8-staff shall return the gear, double bagged and labelled to their station where they will make arrangements with their DC to have the gear transported to the A&M division.
9-shall use their secondary ensemble — if they don’t have secondary set of gear then a set of spare gear can be signed out
Ensemble elements include…
Helmet - may be cleaned in house using a mild detergent
Balaclavas/hood elements - may be sent for specialized cleaning along with bunker gear ensembles
firefighting boots - may be cleaned in house using a mild detergent
Firefighting gloves - may be sent for Specialized cleaning along with bunker gear ensembles
When it is determined that an element of PPE requires a repair, the employee shall:
1-Immediatley notify his or her supervisor
2-Take the element out of service
3-Fill out a Special Cleaning and Repair Work Order form and submit it electronically to the Supply and Equipment Officer
4-Utilize secondary ensemble if applicable or a spare ensemble
5-Pants and coats should be sent for repairs as a unit.
6-Employee and supervisor will arrange to have the ensemble sent to Supply and Equipment officer with special cleaning and repair form attached
7-Do not wash ensembles prior to sending them to the Supply and Equipment officer for repair.
8-S&E officer will arrange for the element to be sent fro repairs
9-All ensemble and element repairs shall be logged in the PPE management software
