….are handwashed to ensure the longevity of the item, although the user may choose to machine wash the items in accordance with this SOG.
Personal Protective Equipment includes
- Bunker Gear ensembles
- Elements including helmets and liners, balaclavas/hood elements, and firefighting boots and gloves.
Employees are responsible for the routine cleaning of their issued ensemble and ensemble elements
Bunker gear Ensemble - Once it has been determined that an article of PP is soiled with a non-toxic substance, the employee shall perform the following:
1-Any dry debris should be gently brushed off the elements. Water may also be used to remove debris.
2-Any additional layers should be separated from the solid area.
3-The employee shall ensure all pockets are emptied and any attached accessories are removed
4-Remove the suspenders and DRD and keep in your possession
5-If the DRD requires cleaning it shall be hand washed by the user.
6-The ensemble suit layers shall be separated
7-Liners shall be removed and bagged separately from the outer shell.
8-The 2 separate bags containing the outer shell and liners shall be placed in one large plastic bag
9-The completed Laundry Tag shall be placed in between the inner bags and the large outer bag.
10-The Laundry Tag shall contain the following info:
–The name, station and shift
–Items being sent for Advanced cleaning shall be clearly listed on the laundry tag.
11-The outer plastic bag shall have the employee’s name, station and shift clearly written on the bag.
12-The staff shall make arrangements for the gear to be sent to 206 or 213 for cleaning.
13-If applicable, the employee shall begin using their secondary ensemble. If the employee has not been issued a secondary ensemble, they shall sign out a set of spare gear until the cleaned ensemble is returned.
Laundry Tags shall contain the following information
1-The name of the employee shall be clearly written on the laundry tag along with station and shift.
2-The items being sent for advanced cleaning shall be clearly listed on the laundry tag.
When gloves, balaclava or helmet liners require routine cleaning and the user chooses to have the elements machine washed, the employee will utilize their secondary elements and complete the following.
1-Any dry debris should be gently brushed off the elements. Water may also be used to remove debris.
2-Gloves shall be bagged separately from balaclava and helmet liners
3-2 separate bags, first containing the gloves and second containing the balaclavas and helmet liners shall be placed in a 3rd bag.
4-The laundry tag shall be placed between the inner bags and outer bags
5-The staff shall make arrangements for the gear to be sent to 206 or 213 fro cleaning.
Washing Requirements - General
1-All articles of PPE shall be washed in the machine designated specifically fro PPE
2-Heavily soiled areas shall be pretreated in a utility sink without the use of solvents, chlorine bleach or cleaning agents by staff at 206/213
3-Protective gloves and eye protection should be worn while handling soiled gear
4-The water shall not exceed 40 degrees C.(105 degrees F)
5-Only the detergent supplied by the Supply and Equipment Officer shall be used for washing
6-The outer shell of bunker gear and any areas of ensemble elements that are reflective shall not be cleaned with a brush or any abrasive cleaning device.
7-206/213 shall remove the laundry tag from the garments. The tag should be kept to reattach the top portion to the ensemble when it is returned and the bottom portion should be kept to be submitted tot he A&M Division.
8-The bottom portions of the Laundry Tags shall be sent to the Supply and Equipment Officer at the end of every month. The tags shall be organized in alphabetical order.
Washing Requirements - Ensemble Suit
1-206/213 staff shall receive the gear and verify
-the laundry tags are attached
-all pockets are emptied and accessories removed
-all closure, hooks, snaps and zippers are fastened
2-The ensemble suit layers shall be separated. Liners shall be removed and washed inside-out with other liners
3-The outer shell of the ensemble coat and pants may be washed with other outer shells
4-Ensembe suits may be dried in pep dryers.
