What is the purpose of the Colour Code for Communications SOG?
To provide staff a method of conveying information about a particular incident by way of abbreviated code where the information may have an impact on suppression staff or civilians at an incident response.
Who does the Colour code Guideline apply to?
This guideline applies to communications staff and suppression staff in cases where unusual, unsafe or unpredictable may circumstances exist at an incident and where use of codes is deemed necessary either by suppression or communications staff.
Code Yellow
Calls that require the extra use of caution.
Code Blue
Calls reported as suicide or attempted suicide
Code Orange
Calls involving communicable diseases
Code Red
Calls that require Police to assist
Code Green
Calls involving grow labs (police to assist)
Code 5
Calls involving obvious signs of death
Should staff elaborate on the codes over the air?
Staff will NOT elaborate on these codes over the radio as doing so may jeopardize the safety of fire staff or the staff of assisting agencies.
When will Code 5 be used?
Code 5 will be used when the patient has obvious signs of death and no patient care will be rendered. The on scene officer may use this term to provide Communications with an update to be relayed to Ambulance as “obvious signs of death” or when they have family members on the scene with the patient.
