Fall Arrest
A safety system comprised of a safety harness and lanyard. Aerial Platforms shall be equipped with such systems
Fall Restraint
A safety system comprised of a safety belt. Aerials shall be equipped with such systems
Fall Protection
A safety system which may be comprised of either a fall arrest system or a fall restraint device
Driver for the purpose of this SOG
For the purpose of this SOG this may include personnel not actually assigned to driving the apparatus but otherwise assisting the driver with elevating device operations.
When positioning the apparatus consideration shall be given to (list 15)
1-Required operations
2-Placement near a corner of the structure
3-Overhead obstructions
4-Space for deployment of all outriggers
5-Exclusion zones
6-An area that is as level and as stable as possible - if this is not possible always work off the high side
7-Hot/soft asphalt that may cause an unstable surface
8-Soft earth/ground erosion caused by hydrant supply hose run-off or rain
9-Frozen ground thawing caused by apparatus created heat
10-Retaining wall heights
11-Open construction areas
12-Underground parking ramps and/or garages
13-Underground drain or sewer pipes
14-Manhole covers
15-Curbs
Parking Brake?
As soon as the apparatus has been placed, apply the parking brake
Front wheels and wheel chocks
Ensure the front wheels are straight and position wheel chocks in front of and behind front wheels of apparatus
Outriggers
The outriggers shall be deployed and placed as per the Operators Manual
Apparatus placement
At all times when placing an apparatus, the driver shall use good judgement in potentially precarious situation to not jeopardize apparatus stability.
During normal operations who is in control of the elevating device?
During normal operations, the driver of the apparatus shall be in control of operating the elevating device.
The elevating device may be controlled form where?
Elevating devices may be controlled from 1 of 4 locations pending the design of the particular apparatus. (turntable, side-mounted, rear mounted, platform)
When can more than 1 control be used?
At no time shall more than 1 control be in use
Midship spotter
Until the elevating device is free and clear of all body components and/or fixtures, a midship spotter and a elevating device spotter shall be in place before any raising and rotation of the turntable is performed. Visual contact shall be maintained between both spotters and the driver
Elevating device spotter
Once the elevating device has cleared all the body components and/or fixtures the elevating device spotter shall assist the driver in placing the elevating device for operations. The midship spotter may not be required at their point. The remaining elevating device spotter shall remain in close proximity to the committed elevating device for further assistance if required.
Drivers shall
-maintain constant communications with any personnel utilizing the elevating device
-notify personnel utilizing the elevating device anytime additional personnel shall be climbing the ladder and/or prior to any ladder repositioning
-no leave the elevating device controls when personnel are utilizing the elevating device
-maintain visual contact with the elevating device and “if possible” the spotters any time the elevating device is motion
-ensure spotters are utilized when bringing the platform down to ground level. Not only for ground obstructions but for ensuring clearance of the apparatus and portions thereof
-
