13-04 Flashcards
Guideline for Drivers.
1-Safety Precautions shall be observed at all times by drivers when driving apparatus. Drivers are reminded that the safety of personnel and the apparatus is solely their responsibility.
2-The driver shall ensure that they know the location of the incident that they are responding to and they know the most direct route.
3-Drivers are to be familiar with their response district and roads within it and whenever possible, avoid poorly constructed and unpaved roads
4-When exiting the station, the driver shall proceed slowly until the apparatus is clear of the station, all personnel and the exhaust extractor.
5-Drivers shall ensure that apparatus responding to an incident will occupy both lanes on a four-lane roadway, if possible.
6-Apparatus where possible, shall be driven in the left lane when responding to and returning from an incident or when conducting driver training.
7-Keep all wheels on the travelled road surface if possible keeping in mind that driving on the shoulders can create instability.
8-Under normal circumstances slower traffic call be overtaken and passed on the left side only, drivers should avoid passing vehicles on right unless it is a last resort.
9-When apparatus is in motion the Jacobs brake is to be in high setting. Caution should be used when the roads are icy/slippery. These conditions may require the driver to switch the Jacobs brake to the off and/or low setting.
10-during an emergency response drivers are to ensure that sirens, air horns and emergency lights are utilized to ensure all available means of notifying surrounding motorists of the apparatus’s emergency response, particularly when moving through an intersection. Consideration for time of day may reduce the need for sirens and air horns
11-During an emergency response drivers are reminded to be patient, employ warning devices and proceed in the safest manner possible.
12-Drivers should avoid travelling in opposing traffic lane unless the viewed traffic is clear. This maneuver should only be attempted with extreme caution and keeping the apparatus to the far right.
13-Drivers are to ensure that sirens, air horns and/or emergency lights shall not be used when responding to non-emergecny calls, one-ups or when retiring from an incident.
14-Spotters shall be used when apparatus must negotiate forward turns restrictive side clearances and where height clearances are uncertain.
The Guideline that must be adhered to when crossing an intersection (approaching an intersection, crossing on a green, crossing on a red/stop signal, making a turn in front of stopped vehicles)
Slow down prior to reaching an intersection in order to:
a) Get a good view of the situation
b) Avoid startling unaware motorists
Crossing on green signal:
a) Slow down
b) Take foot off accelerator and cover the brake pedal
c) Look in all three directions and be aware of oncoming vehicles turning in front of the apparatus
d) Proceed with caution
Crossing on a red signal / stop sign:
a) Come to a complete stop next to the vehicles
b) Establish eye contact with drivers of other vehicles
c) Wait for the Captain to communicate it is all clear
d) Apply a 2 second count and then proceed with caution
Making right or left turns in front of stopped vehicles:
a) Come to a complete stop next to the vehicle
b) Establish eye contact with side vehicles drivers either through your Captain or yourself
c) Wait for your Captain to indicate their side is clear.
d) Be aware of vehicles approaching the apparatus from behind
e) Proceed with caution
Guideline for Drivers at Emergency Scenes.
1-Drivers shall consider the dangers a moving apparatus poses to fire ground and spectators who may be preoccupied with the emergency and may inadvertently step in front of or behind a moving apparatus
2-Where possible and does not place personnel at unnecessary risk in placing them, pylons are to utilized to ensure personnel and apparatus safety.
3-Drivers are to ensure that ladder beds left in the down position are clearly marked for the safety of personnel.
4-Emergency lights shall be left on until the emergency is over and the apparatus is ready to leave the scene
5-Care should be taken to ensure there is sufficient room to manoeuvre apparatus and it does not become blocked by traffic.
Guideline for drivers Backing up the apparatus.
1-Avoid backing-up apparatus whenever possible, plan ahead when parking so back-up is not necessary
2-Where backing-up is unavoidable, use personnel as spotters who move with apparatus and use the apparatus as shielding as much as possible
3-Emergency lights are to be used when backing apparatus in a congested area, onto streets and when backing apparatus into station from a street
4-When personnel are unavailable, drivers should dismount and walk around the apparatus, before backing-up, to ensure there are no unseen obstacles
5-When backing up drivers shall roll their window down completely and use two spotters if available (one at the left rear corner and the other at the right front corner)
6-the driver shall make verbal communication with the spotter NOTE- “if you cannot hear the spotter do not back-up”
7-All personnel shall have a thorough knowledge of hand signals
8-Personnel shall not place themselves in a position where they will come between a moving vehicle and another object.
Personnel acting as apparatus spotters shall ensure?
1-They survey the right side, rear area and overhead clearance or obstacles that may damage the apparatus
2-They are placed eight to ten feet to the left rear of the apparatus
3-The driver can see and hear you
4-They maintain eye contact with the driver at all times through the left side rear view mirror
5-Direct the driver with approved hand signals and/or verbal communications
6-Allow extra room for the swing factor of an apparatus
7-That the apparatus is not backed in close to any stationary objects
Procedure for attaching the Station Exhaust Extractors.
1-As per back up guidelines drivers are to use spotters when backing into station and connecting to the exhaust extractor
2-Working with the spotter, the driver will bring the apparatus to a complete stop approximately 3 metres from the bay door
3-Once the rear spotter observes that the crew member responsible for hooking up the extractor to the apparatus is clear of the path of the incoming apparatus, they shall nation the driver slowly backing up.
4-When the muffler section of the apparatus is inside the station enough to reach the ventilation hook-up, the rear spotter will signal the driver to stop. This will ensure that no attempt is made to connect the ventilation system while the apparatus is in motion
5-Once the apparatus is stopped, the crew member responsible for hooking up the exhaust shall signal for the exhaust extractor to be attached to the apparatus
6-Once the system is connected, the rear spotter will ensure that all personnel are out of the way of the path of the incoming apparatus and motion the driver to continue the backing of the apparatus until it comes to its intended position
When should the apparatus be washed?
Apparatus should be washed when necessary.
The proper sequence for shutting down the apparatus.
1-All lights and accessories shall be in the off position
2-Ensure air tanks are fully charged
3-Shut down engine
4-Turn battery to the off position
5-Connect station power (MDU requires a constant source of power)
Driver training and evaluation
1-When evaluating a driver the shift instructor shall occupy the passenger side of the front seat.
2-Conflicts arising between the shift driving instructor and he driver shall be resolved by using another shift examiner.
