Fire Alarm Activations - No Fire Conditions - How do you gain access to the unit?
Personnel shall make every effort to establish contact with individuals on the premise. Key-box keys may be required when no persons are present and/or after hours. Notify PRP and the alarm company through Fire Control to alleviate concerns regarding activation of any intrusion alarm if access is gained through the use of key-box or other than normal means.
Assist in determining the location of the alarm?
Personnel shall attempt to locate the alarm panel and/or annunciator panel to assist in determining the cause and location of the alarm.
Remote locations of alarm or annunciator panels.
Personnel are reminded that the fire alarm/annunciator panel may be located at a different location than the main entrance and may only be reset at this location
Once the location of the alarm is determined, personnel may…..
….respond to the floor/area of the alarm to determine the cause.
In the event that personnel have determined the alarm to be false they may: (3)
1-Use the “signal alarm silence” button, to silence the bells from unnecessary ringing
2-Announce, using the voice communication system, a message that the problem has been identified and that the alarm is a false alarm.
3-Reset the fire alarm panel (have building personnel reset their system)
Intervene directly to correct fire protection system problems?
Personnel shall not intervene directly to correct fire protection system problems, but may provide information or guidance to the owner/occupant or their rep. as to the possible corrective measures that may be taken to alleviate the problem.
The system Fails to Reset.
- personnel may wait one minute in order to silence the bells (system should not silence until after at least one minute of activation). The area/floor indication should still be showing on the alarm panel.
- Advise owner/occupant/rep. to have qualified service rep. repair the fire alarm system as soon as possible.
- Issue an NTR
- Have occupant/owner contact their monitoring company & Fire Control in order to relay “on-line/off-line “ status
- Advise the owner/tenant the panel in alarm condition still leaves the building monitored however this does not include the area/floor of the alarm
- Advise the owner/tenant to have a fire watch on the affect area/floor until repairs have been completed.
Repair Fire Alarm Systems
It is not BFES personnel’s responsibility to repair or remove any defective parts of any fire alarm systems
Bell Module
At no time shall the bell module be removed, from the fire alarm system in order to silence the bells from ringing. If the bell module is found to be removed issue a NTR
When can the bells be silenced?
At no time shall the fire alarm bells be silenced(except during voice communication message and/or SOG 03-02) until the investigation of the alarm by personnel has proven to be a false alarm.
Radios waves and alarm panels
At no time should a portable radio be used in front of the fire alarm panel. Radio waves may damage modules and major components of fire alarm systems. Personnel should turn to the side to use the radio.
Alarm systems reset by occupants.
Advise the occupants/owner/tenant that at no time should an alarm be reset by occupants/owners/tenants before the arrival of fire personnel.
Access to a premise by other than normal means
when access to a premise has been gained through a key-box or other than normal means, personnel shall endeavour to leave the premise as found. If required call for the assistance of police and update Fire Control to have monitoring company notified.
