Final Exam Flashcards - Glaucoma
Glaucoma
-Ciliary body continually produces aqueous humor which can put pressure on the optic nerve and cause vision loss
Open Angle vs. Angle Closure Glaucoma
- Open Angle: Abnormal accumulation of aqueous humor
- Angle closure: Aqueous humor drainage is impaired
Pharmacological Treatment of Glaucome
- Decrease formation of aqueous humor
- Increase drainage of aqueous humor
Drugs That Decrease Aqueous Humor Formation
- B-blockers
- A-Adrenergic agonists
- Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
B-Blockers
- Common ending: “olol”
- Decrease Aqueous humor by inhibiting the action of epinephrine and norepinephrine of blood vessels in ciliary body of the eye
A-Adrenergic Antagonists
- Reduce blood flow in ciliary body
- Reduce formation of aqueous humor
- also increase aqueous humor outflow
Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors
- common ending: “zolamide”
- Decrease pressure by decreasing the rate of production of aqueous humor
Drugs That Promote Drainage of Aqueous Humor
- A-adrenergic agonists
- Cholinergic agonists
- Prostaglandin analogs
Cholinergic Agonists
- Bind to receptors and mimic acetylcholine
- Binding contracts ciliary muscles and pupil
Prostaglandin Analogs
- Common ending: “prost”
- Relax ciliary muscles to permit drainage of aqueous humor
Prostaglandin Analogs ADR’s
-Permanent changes in eye color and may thicken eyelashes
