Final Exam Flashcards - Eczema & Psoriasis
Eczema
-General term that describes several types of skin inflammation
Psoriasis
-A condition associated with very rapid turnover of skin cells
Pharmaceutical Treatment for Eczema and Psoriasis
- Topical corticosteroids
- Calcineurin inhibitors
- Vitamin D analogs
- Immunosuppressants
- TNF-a inhibitors
- Furanocoumarins
- Misc. Agents
Topical Corticosteroids
- Possess antiinflammatory and immunosuppressive properties
- Categorized as Very potent, Potent, Moderately potent, Mild, and Least potent
Topical Corticosteroids ADR’s
- Thinning of skin
- Spider veins
- Acne
- Stretch marks
- Bruising
- Poor wound healing
Calcineurin Inhibitors
- Control inflammation and reduce immune system response to allergens
- Mostly for eczema
Vitamin D Analogs
- Only effective for treatment of Psoriasis
- Calcipotriol inhibits the rapid and repeated turnover of skin cells
Immunosuppressants
-Can downregulate the body’s response to allergens and irritants
Immunosuppressants ADR’s
- N/V
- Dangerous drop in RBC and WBC
- Kidney and liver toxicity
- Weight gain
- Hypertension
TNF-a Inhibitors
-Block the inflammatory process triggered by high levels of TNF
Furanocoumarins
-Suppresses DNa synthesis and decreases cell replication and proliferation
