Antifibrinolytic, Hemostatic Agent
TXA Onset
5-15 minutes
TXA Duration
2-5 hours
TXA Indications
Per Mr. Fortin
Blunt or penetrating trauma with significant hypotension.
Any arterial bleeding that requires a tourniquet.
TXA Contraindications
Per Mr. Fortin
> 3 hours from initial injury
Isolated head injury
Known coagulation disorder (i.e. hemophilia)
Suspected stroke or STEMI
TXA Side Effects/ Precautions
Per Mr. Fortin
Seizures, dizziness, headache, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea vomiting, diarrhea, back pain, DVT, PE
Rapid administration can cause hypotension
TXA Adult dose
Per Mr. Fortin
1g in 100ml NS over 10 mins (max 1g)
TXA Pediatric dose
Per Mr. Fortin
20 mg/kg in 100 ml NS over 10 mins (max 1g)

TXA Mechanism of Action
Per Mr. Fortin:
Synthetic derivative of amino acid lysine which then blocks lysine binding sites on
plasminogen, which inhibits fibrinolysis (fibrin clot degradation by plasmin).
