Etomidate Classfication?
General anesthetic, non-barbiturate sedative hypnotic
Etomidate Mechanism?
Capital: Etomidate binds with GABA receptors causing an influx of chloride into the post-synaptic neuron to hyperpolarize it and slow conduction.
Etomidate Indications?
Premedication prior to procedures such as RSI, endotracheal intubation, synchronized cardioversion, conscious sedation for bone dislocation relocation.
Etomidate Contraindications?
Hypersensitivity, labor and delivery
Etomidate Side Effects/Precautions?
Hypotension, hypertension, dysrhythmia, hypoventilation, nausea/ vomiting, cortisol suppression, hypersensitivity, pain at injection site
May suppress adrenal gland production of steroid hormones, which can cause temporary gland failure. Avoid routine use in patients with long term sympathetic output (sepsis)
Etomidate Adult Dose?
0.3mg/kg IV over 30-60 sec, limited to one dose
Etomidate Pediatric Dose?
PALS:
0.2 to 0.4 mg/kg IV/IO infused over 30 to 60 seconds (max 20mg) will produce rapid sedation that lasts for 10-15 mins
Capital:
>10 years- 0.3mg/kg IV over 30-60 sec with a max dose of 20 mg

< 1 minute
Etomidate Duration of Action?
3-5 mins
Etomidate Max Dose Adult/Pediatric?
Adult limit 1 dose (Pediatric 20mg)
Etomidate Routes of Administration?
IV/IO over 30-60 sec
