Furosemide Mechanism

A

Medscape:
Loop diuretic; inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions at proximal convoluted tubes and distal convoluted renal tubules and loop of Henle; by interfering with chloride-binding cotransport system, causes increases in water, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and chloride excretion.

Capital:
Potent loop diuretic that inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride in kidneys. Also causes venous dilation prompting a reduce in preload and decreasing cardiac workload

A

Capital:
Hypersensitivity, Hypovolemia, Anuria
Electrolyte deficiencies, most notably hypokalemia

Furosemide Side Effects/ Precautions/ Comments

A

Capital:
Hypotension, Electrolyte deficiencies, Nausea/vomiting, Diarrhea, Muscle cramps
Metabolic alkalosis,
Deafness and projectile vomiting can occur with rapid IVP
Expect a 10-12 mm Hg systolic and 5-7 mm Hg diastolic BP drop
