Atropine Mechanism

A

Medscape:
Antimuscarinic; inhibits action of acetylcholine at parasympathetic sites in smooth muscle, CNS, and secretory glands. Increases cardiac output and dries secretions

Capital:
Inhibits the actions of acetylcholine to block parasympathetic stimulation

Atropine Contraindications

A

CT Protocols:
Allergy: Cease administration if atropine toxicity is observed (tachycardia, dry/hot skin, etc.)

Capital:
Tachycardia, Hypersensitivity, Hypothermic bradicardia, Relatively contraindicated in STEMI

Atropine Adult Dose

A

CT Protocols:
Bradycardia
1.0 mg IV/IO every 3 – 5 minutes up to maximum of 3mg.

Organophosphate Poisoning and Nerve Agent
2 mg IM or IV/IO; double dose and repeat every 5 minutes
(i.e. 4mg, then 8mg, etc.) until out of atropine or bronchorrhea ceases.

Rapid Sequence Intubation
Consider 0.5mg IV/IO for bradycardia
