Ibuprofen Classification
CT Protocols:
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, Non-opioid analgesic

Ibuprofen Mechanism
Medscape:
Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins in body tissues by inhibiting at least 2 cyclo-oxygenase (COX) isoenzymes, COX-1 and COX-2
May inhibit chemotaxis, alter lymphocyte activity, decrease proinflammatory cytokine activity, and inhibit neutrophil aggregation; these effects may contribute to anti-inflammatory activity
New Britain:
Nonselective competitive agonist of COX -> prostaglandin synthesis inhibition -> analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties
Acts peripherally, not centrally, and therefor does not possess the sedative effects of narcotics

Ibuprofen Indications
CT Protocols:
Mild to moderate pain
Fever (Per dosing guide)
Medscape:
Pain/Fever/Dysmenorrhea, Inflammatory Disease
Ibuprofen Contraindications
CT Protocols:
Allergy, Pregnancy, Renal insufficiency, Peptic ulcer, Potential for bleeding/likely to need surgery, Undifferentiated abdominal pain, Suspected fractures
Ibuprofen Side Effects/ Precautions/ Comments
New Britain:
Hypertension, dizziness, drowsiness, edema, nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation, rash, itching
May cause GI irritation and hemorrhage
Worsened side effects when given with other NSAIDS
Ibuprofen Adult Dose
CT Protocols:
Pain Management or Fever: 400 mg PO; Do not combine with other NSAID.
New Britain:
400mg (2 200mg tablets) PO
Ibuprofen Pediatric Dose
New Britain:
10mg/kg (max 400mg) PO
Ibuprofen Max Dose Adult (Pediatric)
New Britain:
Use with caution in nursing women
Do not exceed 4 grams/day
