Cefazolin Mechanism

A

Medscape:
First-generation semisynthetic cephalosporin that binds to 1 or more penicillin-binding proteins, thereby arresting bacterial cell-wall synthesis and inhibiting bacterial replication; has poor capacity to cross blood-brain barrier; primarily active against skin flora, including S aureus

Known penicillin or cefazolin allergy

Patient contact duration too short

Cefazolin Side Effects/ Precautions/ Comments

A

New Britain:
Seizure, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, skin rash, pain at injection site
Must be reconstituted 1g in 10ml NS, exact time of administration must be documented.
Increased risk of bleeding with vitamin K agonists (warfarin)

A

CT Protocols:
Prophylaxis for Open Fracture or Major Open Wounds:
If > 39 kg, 2 grams IV/IO, slow…over 1-2 minutes
If < 39 kg, 50 mg/kg IV/IO slow…over 1-2 minutes;
round dose to nearest 100 mg
