Fentanyl Mechanism
Medscape:
Narcotic agonist-analgesic of opiate receptors; inhibits ascending pain pathways, thus altering response to pain; increases pain threshold; produces analgesia, respiratory depression, and sedation

Capital:
1-3 mins IV
Fentanyl Duration of Action

Fentanyl Indications
CT Protocols:
Moderate to severe pain
Post-intubation analgesia
Fentanyl Contraindications
CT Protocols:
Allergy, BP < 100 mmHg, Patient with non-opioid directive
Capital:
Hypersensitivity, Respiratory. depression
Fentanyl Side Effects/ Precautions/ Comments
Capital:
Respiratory depression, Confusion, Sedation, Bradycardia, Hypotension, Nausea/vomiting, Tachycardia, Syncope
Fentanyl Adult Dose
CT Protocols:
1 mcg/kg (up to 100 micrograms) IV/IO; may repeat every five minutes to a max dose of 300 micrograms.
Fentanyl Pediatric Dose
1 mcg/kg IV/IO/IM/IN repeated every 5-10 minutes; max single dose 100 mcg
Fentanyl Max Dose Adult (Pediatric)
100mcg/dose, 300mcg total

Fentanyl How Supplied
50mcg/ml vials
Chemically unrelated to morphine, yet 50-100 times stronger with shorter half-life and less chance of vomiting. Increased respiratory depression when used with other CNS depressants.
