MS 1 Flashcards
MS is the most common _____________
inflammatory demyelinating disease of the CNS
What nerves does MS spare?
peripheral
Inflammatory/demyelinating lesions form these
scars/plaques
Where are demyelinating scars/plaques from MS found?
CNS white matter
MS is characterized by these phases
- exacerbations
- remissions
When do s/s of MS begin occurring?
- between 20-40
- peak at age 30
Rare onset of MS occurs when?
- childhood
- after 50
Women/Men are 2x as likely to get MS
Women
What increases the likelihood of MS 10-fold?
family hx
Is there an environmental component to MS?
yes - more prevalent in colder climates
What are the types of MS?
- Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS)
- Relapsing-Remitting (RRMS)
- Primary Progressive (PPMS)
- Secondary Progressive (SPMS)
What is CIS?
- FIRST episode of neuro sx due to demyelination of CNS
- MUST last at least 24 hours
How is CIS different from MS?
Characteristic of MS but does not yet meet criteria for dx
What must happen for it to be categorized as MS?
MUST have 2 separate documented lesions or episodes
What is the most common type of MS?
Relapsing-Remitting (RRMS)
