- Informal Conversation
most commonly used method. Direct and predetermined questions to gather information about learning needs. Established a trusting environment, free of destructions, remain non-judgmental about learners’ strength, belief and motivation. Telephone is a good tool for interview if client is inaccessible, however, non-verbal cues is overlooked.
- Structured interview
with similar characteristics of learner – age, gender and experience with the topic under discussion.
- Focus Groups (4-12 members)
checklist is one of the most common forms of questionnaires, easy to administer, and provide privacy compared to interview.
- Questionnaire
giving written pretest before planned teaching to identify knowledge level of learner. (e.g. Diabetes knowledge test – to assess learning need for self-management of diabetes).
- Test
initial assessment, progress notes, nursing care plans, staff notes, and discharge planning forms can provide information about learning needs, review also documentations made by other healthcare teams.
- Documentation
The time the learner demonstrates an interest in learning the information necessary to maintain optimal health.
READINESS TO LEARN
Refers to the ways and preferred approached to different learning task, and are based either of biological in origin or socially developed from environmental influences.
