BMS08-1011 Body Fluids Flashcards
Write 1 millimole per litre
1 mmol/l
Name the 3 main fluid compartments and there % of water
Intracellular- 40
Plasma- 5
Interstitial- 15
Name 4 other fluid compartments
Gi tract secretion
Lymph
Synovial fluid
Cerebrospinal fluid
How can we measure fluid compartments?
Add known amount of substance to it and measure conc using V = substance / conc
e.g. things that wont cross capillaries or enter cells easily but does distribute in all water (heavy water, sucrose, albumin)
What is the interstitial space?
Extracellular space - plasma volume
What units measure osmolarity?
millosmoles/litre mOsm/L
What is an osmole?
6x10 to the power of 23 per litre
Tonicity
When solutions are separated by semi-permeable membrane
What causes crystalloid osmotic pressure?
Small diffusible ions
Describe a platelet (2)
No nucleus
Dense granules
Which tissues don’t have the normal water composition? (3)
Bone
Fat
Plasma
