BMS03-1021 The synapse & NMJ Flashcards
Where are intercalated discs mainly found between muscles?
In the heart, they aren’t many in the brain
What do intercalated discs do?
Allow the muscles to work as one unit, hense skeletal muscles don’t have them as they are fibres not individual muscle cells
What is a gap junction?
Connects the cytoplasm of two cells allowing them to communicate
What are the 2 types of neurons?
Inhibitory and excitatory
Which part of the neuron decides if the action potential will continue?
Axon hillock
What are junctional folds?
Post synaptic receptors in the muscle end plate
What is current?
The rate at which electrical charge goes past a point
What is voltage?
Electrical force driving the current
Amount of work being done to separate ions across the membrane
How does depolarisation occur?
Miniature end plate potentials interact to depolarise the post synaptic cell
How do flexor and extensor muscles work?
Sensory neuron splits to the extensor and flexor, one is inhibited by glutamate and the other excited by glutamate
Why is there no change in voltage with IPSP?
Chloride in = chloride out
