SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Definition- Exposure
any time that personnel or equipment are subjected to contaminants either via emergency incidents or training activities
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Definition- soiled
PPE exposed to sweat, mild odours, dust and debris
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Definition- Contaminated by Fire
PPE exposed to but limited to, physical and gaseous products of combustion
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Definition- Contaminated by Biological or Chemical products
PPE exposed to but not limited to petroleum or Chemical products, other oils, anatomical tissues or bodily fluids, or otherwise determined by an on scene incident commander
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Definition- mitigation
reduce or neutralize the severity of hazardous exposures as defined by contaminated
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Definition- containment
Physically separating contaminated equipment from the environment
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Definition- Decontamination
the washing, neutralizing and/ or sterilizing of PPE to return it to service
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
it is the responsibility of each individual or supervisor to initiate Decontamination procedures when they feel it is required
- if directly or possibly returning to the hot zone (5)
- firefighter exiting the building are to stay on air, where possible, and not remove and PPE until cleaned thoroughly
- firefighter who do remove SCBA or firefighter gloves, shall themselves protect from off-gassing gear with an N95 mask and nitrile gloves
- if assigned to rehab, turnout gear should be left in an area away from personnel so that it can off-gas without causing additional exposures. weather conditions may affect this location
- avoid using water and wetting down PPE
- Personnel providing decontamination, rehab or changing cylinders shall wear PPE appropriate to the suspected hazard
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
When personnel are being released (4)
- firefighter are to report to “Decon” sector where a Decontamination hose line and cleaning station is set up in the warm zone of an incident
- firefighters exiting the building are to stay on air, where possible, and not remove any PPE until cleaned thoroughly
- personnel providing Decontamination rehab or changing cylinders shall wear PPE appropriate to the suspected hazard
- procedures should be followed according to the level of second required
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Level 1 Decontamination
Applies to training or emergency incidents PPE that has been soiled and is not contaminated by fire or contaminated by biological or Chemical contaminants PPE will be
cleaned accordance to SOG 26-01
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Level 2 Decontamination- contaminated by fire
the following is to be completed prior to leaving the incident scene or training site where personnel, their PPE and/or equipment (6)
- Use a dry brush to remove gross Decontamination
- Use low pressure water spray and soap to clean gear and equipment to remove obvious solid contamination
- rinse off Bunker boots, gloves, helmet and face mask
- Doff gear
- Wipes shall be used as initial personal Decontamination to aid in cleaning and removal of spot smoke and other potential carcinogens from the body
- any equipment (ie SCBA, medical bags, etc) that normally is placed within the cab area of the apparatus shall also be bagged and placed in an external compartment of the apparatus or a support vehicle
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Level 2 Decontamination
Doffing gear and ensemble in the following manner (8)
- remove helmet and place in plastic bag
- remove SCBA and face piece and set aside for Decontamination
- remove firefighting gloves and balaclava and place in same plastic bag
- don nitrile gloves
- don n95
- remove Bunker gear elements and boots- place in same bag
- consider the removal of station fatigue for gross contamination and donning either a second set of fatigues or a tyvex suit
- seal bag and set aside for transportation
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Level 2 Decontamination-
Wipes shall be used as initial personal Decontamination to aid in cleaning and removal of soot, smoke, and other potential carcinogens from the body, for effective use (5)
- expand wipe to full size to maximize the cleaning surface area
- begin cleaning at the neck, throat, jaw, and face areas prone to exposures an highest absorption rates of the skin
- ensure areas around eyes, ears, and nose are wiped
- continue to other exposed areas such as hands, wrists lower extremities and groin
- when both sides of wipe become soiled, use additional wipes as required discard properly after use in sealed bag for disposal, never flush in toilets
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Level 2 Decontamination- personnel assisting with cylinder changes on scene should wear a minimum
PPE of an N95 mask and nitrile gloves, cyclinders should be washed before being put on the air light truck
SOG 26-07 personnel Post exposures decontamination
Return to station- the priority for personnel that were exposed is the is the reduction of their
personal contamination prior to getting equipment and apparatus back in service
