SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
Definition - evacuation stairwell
stairwell utilized for evacuation operations, generally suitable for civilians
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
Definition -Operations Stairwell
stair utilized for firefighting operations with possible propped open doors, generally unsuitable for civilians
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
Definition - Set up
two fans in series one placed in front of another with approx, 1.5-2m between them
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
Definition - Stack effect
Stack effect or chimney effect is the movement of air into and out of buildings, chimneys, flue-gas stacks, or other containers
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
Definition -ventilation sector officer
officer of an apparatus designated to plan and coordinate ventilation of a structure
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
the third arriving apparatus, unless otherwise assigned or directed, shall
begin the setup for ventilating a high rise structure
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
all third apparatus personnel shall set up at the exterior exit to the operations stairwell if possible it should not be expected
that entry control operations are to be conducted by a third arriving apparatus at a high-rise emergency
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
once set up has been established for the operations stairwell and two members of the third apparatus have begun Ascent to the upper floors through operations stairwell, the remaining 2 personnel shall
move to the exterior exit to the evacuations stairwell and set up an identical set up shall be performed
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
personnel ascending the stairwells shall determine (6)
- effectiveness of the ventilation/pressurization efforts
- assisting/redirecting evacuating occupants
- assisting/rescuing found occupants and fire personnel
- observing heat and smoke conditions on all floors (only report significance)
- locating exhaust point (roof hatches/man doors
- removing immediate smoke from upper stairwells
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
once the operation and evacuations stairwells have been pressurized and searched the
IC is to be notified
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
it is not recommended to further ventilate using pressurized air throughout the structure of active firefighting is ongoing. if required and possible, the
area of origin should be used as an exhaust
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
once the fire is contained to the unit of origin and seemed under control these are several options for ventilating the remaining heat, smoke, and toxic gases, (4)
- area of orgin- through door/window
- across/nearby the area origin
- roofs access
- smoke shafts
SOG 17-04 High Rise Ventilation
regardless of the tactic used to ventilate high rise structure
the natural wind should be taken into consideration when determining the best option for the conditions presented
