Examples of Significant Incident (9)
1) Serious injury or death of a fire department member or other emergency personnel
2) Mass casualty incidents
3) Suicide of a fire service member
4) serious injury or death of a civilian resulting from fire service operations
5) Death of a child or violence to a child
6) loss of life or death of patient following extraordinary and prolonged expenditure of physical and emotional energy during rescue efforts by fire service personnel
7) incidents that attract extremely unusual or critical news media coverage
8) Any incident that is charged with profound emotion
9) An incident in which the circumstances were so unusual or the sights and sounds so distressing as to produce a high level of immediate or delayed emotional reaction

Definition- Crisis
A sudden and unexpected situation in which one is confronted with circumstances that are outside their usual life experience and outside of their control

initial support intended to mitigate and normalize the effects of a crisis.

Any personnel who feels a need for individual assistance may
Contact a PST member or the EAFP provider directly

Any personnel who experiences a traumatic or stressful event may,
through themselves or through their commanding officer initiate a request for a PST intervention

Captains have the authority, when a traumatic or stressful event has occurred and brought to their attention
to initiate contact with the PST

The incident Commander shall make a courtesy call to the on call PST member through Communications if
a crew or individual member has been exposed to a significant incident to determine the level of intervention and/or response required by the PST
-SOG 1-11 Peer Support Team-
ICs should reduce exposure to significant incidents by reducing
time personnel are exposed and reducing the number of personnel exposed
-SOG 1-11 Peer Support Team-
ICs shall consider the PST and support when
Time and circumstance permit. Ie large incident and long duration

Types of support- Individual Support
Available upon request. one-on-one support for concerns related to variety of stress related topics including specific incident

Types of support- On scene or near scene support
for both individuals and crews such as information sessions conducted shortly after an incident whereby a PST member provides a brief review of stress related reactions and self help tools

Types of support- Information sessions
Conducted shortly after the incident. an informational update on the incident. A PST member provides a brief review of stress related reactions and self help tools

Types of support- CIS discussion
Led by PST members. conducted within 8-12 hours of the incident at a mutually agreed upon location and time. a confidential non evaluated discussion of involvement thoughts and emotional impact resulting from the incident

Types of support- CIS debriefing
Led by PST members with the support of an EAFP mental health professional counselor. conducted within 24-72 hours at a mutually agreed upon location and time. A more in depth confidential non-evaluation discussion of involvement, thoughts and emotional impact resulting from the incident

Types of support- CIS Follow-ups
Conducted after the incident. check in calls, members involved are usually contracted by phone within 24-73 hours post incident

Location
can be conducted anywhere providing there is ample space, privacy and freedom from distractions. city facilities or other meeting facilites centrally located

Relief of duty- The District/platoon chief (division chief)
has the authority to make this decision
-SOG 1-11 Peer Support Team-
relief of duty- Such decisions may include returning personnel to their stations out of service and allowing the crews
to determine for themselves when they are mentally and physically prepared to return to service
-SOG 1-11 Peer Support Team-
relief of duty- personnel may decide they cannot return to duty for the balance of the day/night or shift.
In this case an officer/chief with the expressed consent of the member, may notify the involved members significant other of the members status and provide direction on how they can best assist the member through this difficult time. onduty chief shall be notified when a member is unable to return to duty

Personnel are reminded to complete a
WIIR following exposures to ‘ significant incidents’ or loss of time as a result of exposure to a tramatic or stress fully event
