SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire Flashcards
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
This SOG is an extrantion of SOG
03-24 Structure Fires and is to used for a specific type of fire
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
Initial response shall follow procedures in
SOG 3-24
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
Once it has been determined that a Hazmat are present and involve of likely to become involved the IC shall
Call for the HAzmat team
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
Information for the first arriving personnel to gather shall include(4)
- hazardous materials involved
- Chemical Names
- Quantities
- Containment systems
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
Reposition
any apparatus and personnel as required
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
Before entering the hot zone a hazard risk assessment shall be performed, questions may include (6)
- Is there a potential that the hazardous materials may react explosively
- Are there Hazardous materials that may spontaneously polymerize?
- Is there a potential that containment systems may explode (BLEVE) due to over pressurization?
- Is there a potential that personnel may contact hazardous materials that are toxic or corrosive, particularly through the skin?
- Are there hazardous materials present that react energetically with water, air, or other contaminants?
- If so are they involved with the fire or likely to become involved with the fire?
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
Sources of information to assist in conducting hazard risk analysis shall be utilized
hazardous materials references and subject matter experts
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
All extinguishing agents shall be assessed for their compatability with hazmat involved, initial attacks are made with
dry chemical and.or CO2 extinguishers
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
If the Hazmat Team has not arrived before entry is made, establish a decontamination area using
45 mm handline and personnel dressed in full PPE, ensure that the location is suitable and that the run off can be controlled
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
When water streams are used, attempt
not to disrupt containers of Hazardous materials
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
When fighting fire involving hazmat, attempt to restrict quantity of run off, if possible
to control and capture all run off as per SOG 3-22
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
IF initial extinguishment efforts are unsuccessful a joint decision by the
-IC
-the industry rep
-and the region of peel spills control and/or MOE
may be made to cease extinguishment efforts, allowing the hazardous materials to burn freely
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
Upon arrival the hazmat team shall (9)
- Evaluate the hazmat involved and conduct a hazard risk assessment
- evaluate and re-establish zones if required
- evaluate and make recommendations regarding the PPE required
- Assess personnel and civilians to determine whether they require decontamination and/or medical treatment
- Setup and preform decon as required
- evaluate make recommendations regarding the PPE required
- Provide additional manpower for firefighting
- regularly evaluate persons exposed to contaminants for symptoms particular to the chemicals involved
- conduct air monitoring as required
-SOG 24-05 Hazardous Materials Fire-
After the fire is extinguished the scene may
still be considered a hazardous materials scene and handled as outlined in sog 24-02
