SOG 26-04 PPE specialized cleaning
Specialized cleaning will be performed when an article of PPE is contaminated with (5)
- biohazardous or hazardous materials such as body fluids
- chemicals
- fuel
- hazardous compounds
- any substance capable of creating harm or damage

Anu article of PPE that has been contaminated with a confirmed CBRNE agent will be retired from service

once it has been determined that the ensemble is contaminated with a hazardous or biohazardous material and it is safe to bag and transport the ensemble, the employee shall perform the following; (12)
-report incident to supervisor
- the supervisor shall examine the extent of the contamination for reporting purposes
- the employee shall wear protective items including, gloves and safety glasses when handling soiled articles
- biohazardous contaminated gear shall be removed at the scene
- the employee shall ensure pockets are emptied and any attached accessories are removed
-Place all biohazardous gear into biohazardous plastic bags. the bags shall be securely closed
- place the biohazardous plastic bags into a clear plastic bag
- the employee shall complete a red contamination label notifying other that the gear is contaminated
- clearly print the name of the firefighter and the shift and station of the firefighter on the contamination label
- the contamination label shall also specify what the suspected contaminates are
- the label shall be placed in between the biohazards bag and the clear plastic bag
- staff shall return the gear double bagged and labelled to their station where they will place it in the black duffel bags provide by manufacturer for shipping
Captain shall make arrangements with A n M for pickup

ensemble elements include helmets, balaclavas/hood elements, fire fighting boots and gloves special cleaning instructions
- firefighting gloves may be sent with gear
- Balaclave may be sent with gear
- firefighting boots may be cleaned in house using mild detergent if this is not feasible the can be sent for Specialized cleaning
- helmets may be cleaned in house with mild detergent
SOG 26-04 PPE specialized cleaning
Repair for Bunker gear, when it has been determined that an element of PPE requires a repair the fire fighter shall (10)
- notify his supervisor
- take element out of service-
- complete, printing clearly a “special cleaning and repair work order form
- the end user shall utilize their secondary ensemble
- the ensemble pants and coat should be sent in for repairs as a unit even if only one needs repair
- the firefighter or Captain shall call or email supply and equipment manager officers at A n M informing them of the necessary repairs, separate the outer shells and liners and place in clear plastic bag along with the completed special cleaning Repair work order form
- all bags should be placed in the black duffel supplied by the manufacturer to ensure proper pick up is carried out
- once repairs completed the items will be returned to the station on the special cleaning form
- do not wash ensembles or elements prior to sending them for repair
- all ensemble and element repairs shall be logged in the PPE management software

Elements that cannot be repaired and must be replaced if they are found to defective, by the supply and equipment Officer; (5)
- Gloves
- balaclavas
- suspenders
- safety glasses
- helmets and helmet elements
- firefighter boots
