SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack Flashcards
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
most offensive fire operations qualify for early application PPA,
the IC should be prepared to deploy PPA where appropriate and early in an operation
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
Prior to committing to a PPA operation the I should consider the following (7)
a) a 360 size up has been completed
b) flow-paths have been determined
c) confirm any vent enter isolate search (VEIS) operations are complete and has protected themselves and the occupants
d) fire location is determined
e) the fire does not involve the structure
f) minimum two crews on scene
g) exhaust locations have been determined
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
ventilation fans should be placed at the point of entry from the
unburned side of the fire
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
ventilation fans should be positioned up ___ back from the entry point, the objective is to create a pressure “cone” effect around the door, this position will also allow access for crews to enter the building
2m
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
PPA should only be continued for
brief duration, it is not meant to be maintained for long term
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
PPA should only be commenced with all personnel
outside of the structure
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
In the simplest terms of this ventilation tactics (3)
- improves the atmosphere- continue with it
- makes no charge - review all aspects and reposition if necessary
- worsening atmosphere - discontinue it’s use
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
flow-paths is determined and preferably
upwind to downwind
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
combining exterior water application (transitional Attack) simultaneously with a positive pressure attack is the
preferred tactical consideration
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
personnel should allow at least _______ of ventilation fan input prior to entering the structure
30-60 secs
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
An exhaust for the pressurized air shall be provided and shall be located in the fire area
this is generally a window, door or other opening
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
the exhaust outlet if possible should be on a ratio
of 2:1 to at a minimum 1:1 to the entry
Exhaust outlet exposures shall be protected if required
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
The exhaust outlet and backflow should provide information on the effectiveness of the PPA
if indicators demonstrate not enough flow (smoke flames, heat) at the exhaust or too much at the backflow, PPA should be re-evaluation or discontinued
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
creating additional openings adjacent to the fire area may create additional flow paths
making a positive pressure attack ineffective with potential to draw the fire into all flow paths
SOG 17-03 Positive Pressure Attack
positive pressure fans may be used for exposures control , this is most effective with common attic either ____,____ and where separating walls may have been breached or ______,______
strip shopping centers, apartment complexes
plumbing, cracks
