SOG 17-01 Ventilation Flashcards
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Definition- Flow path-
the movement of heat and smoke from the higher pressure within the fire area toward the lower-Pressure, generally unless the thermal layering is disturbed, blocked, etc, hot air will travel out on top and cool air will travel in on the bottom
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Definition- Fuel limited- the heat release rate (the amount of energy released over time) of the fire is limited primarily be the chemical and physical characteristics of the available fuels. indicators may include (4)
- an incipient or early growth fire
- high neutral plane (smoke Layer)
- Better visibility
- relatively low temperatures
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Definition- Hydraulic-
using water flow to draw the air out of a structure
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Mechanical Ventilation- using machinery and/or devices to assist in the movement of air, examples may includes (2)
- positive pressure
- Building systems
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Natural ventilation- allowing air to naturally to move without any assistance, examples may include
- Wind
- opening windows
- Creating openings at the highest point of the structure
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Definitions- tactical Ventilation
is planned , systemic, and coordinated removal of heat, smoke and fire gases, and their replacement with cooler fresh air
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
definition- Vent limited- a fire in which the heat release rate and fire growth are regulated by the available oxygen within the space, indicators may include
- fire beyond incipient stage
- mid to low neutral plane ( smoke layering)
- flames exiting a window or door
- air being drawn into the fire when door is opened
- increased tempuatures but will be decaying stage
- common back draft
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Definition- Ventilation profile
the Ventilation points showing the flow paths of heat and smoke out of the structure as well as any air movement into the structure
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
The following should be considered when determining a structured Ventilation profile (9)
- existing and or potential flow-paths
- the location and stage of the fire
- fuel or vent limited
- wind direction
- smoke conditions, volume, velocity, density, colour
- exposures
- rescue or suppression
- building layout and construction
- integrated Ventilation system
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Closing an open door to a structure immediately upon arrival
until these is a tactical advantage to opening it
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Personnel shall decide on Ventilation tactics, natural, mechanical, or hydraulic consider the following when choosing your tactical plan for ventilation (4)
- tactics that complement the incident action plan
- the location of personnel committee to interior operations
- occupant location
- how tactics may affect flow-paths, fire behaviour and operational frames
SOG 17-01 Ventilation
Suppression and ventilation tactics shall be controlled,, communicated and coordinated
personnel shall be advised of the changes to the Ventilation profile or conditions as a result of tactical ventilation
