Kaplan Prep - Respiratory (Key Terms A&P | Lab ex 4) Flashcards
What is the pharynx?
It is the tube going down to the stomach and the lungs.
What is the larynx?
The food pipe in the upper part of the neck.
What is the trachea?
It is a cartilaginous tube that connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs.
What is the inhalation?
It is the action of inhaling or breathing in.
What is the dead space?
It is the volume of a breath that does not participate in gas exchange.
What are the 4 upper airways?
- Nose
- Pharynx
- Trachea
- Bronchi
What is the Anatomical Dead Space?
It is the volume of lungs that does not exchange gas.
What is the Alveolar Ventilation Rate (AVR)?
It is the rate of air flow that the gas exchange areas of the lung encounter during normal breathing.
What is the Residual Volume?
It is the volume of air still remaining in the lungs after the most forcible expiration possible.
What is the Spirometer?
It is a small machine attached to a mouthpiece by a cable.
What is the Spirometry?
It is a common test used to assess how well your lungs work by measuring how much air you inhale, how much you exhale and how quickly you exhale.
What is the Pulmonary Fibrosis?
It is a condition where the tissue deep in the lungs becomes scarred over time.
What is the Emphysema?
It is a lung condition that causes shortness of breath.
What is the Tidal Volume?
It is a measure of the amount of air a person inhales during a normal breath.
What is the Inspiratory Reserve Volume?
It is the volume of air that can be maximally inspired above the volume inspired tidally.
What is the Expiratory Reserve Volume?
It is the additional amount of air that can be expired from the lungs by determined effort after normal expiration.
What is the Residual Volume?
It is the volume of air still remaining in the lungs after the most forcible expiration possible.
What is the Vital Capacity?
It is the greatest volume of air that can be expelled from the lungs after taking the deepest possible breath.
What is the Inspiratory Capacity?
It is the total amount of air that can be drawn into the lungs after normal expiration.
What is the Functional Residual Capacity?
It is the volume of air present in the lungs at the end of passive expiration.
What is the Total Lung Capacity(TLC)?
It is the most air that you can inspire into your lungs.
What is the Forced Expiratory Volume?
It is the volume of air that can be forced out taking a deep breath, an important measure of pulmonary function.
What is the Minute Respiratory Volume (MRV)?
It is the volume of gas inhaled or exhaled from a person’s lungs per minute.
