Gram positive ( terms and definitions) Flashcards
Teichoic acid
a compound present in the walls of Gram-positive bacteria. It is a polymer of ribitol or glycerol phosphate.
Lipoteichoic acid
a major constituent of the cell wall of gram-positive bacteria. These organisms have an inner peptidoglycan layer. It is released from the bacterial cells.
Peptidoglycan
thick (multilayered), a substance forming the cell walls of many bacteria, consisting of glycosaminoglycan chains interlinked with short peptides.
Periplasmic space
the space between the inner cytoplasmic membrane and the bacterial outer membrane, present in gram-positive bacteria.
Cell Membrane
the semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell.
Membrane Protein
perform a variety of functions vital to the survival of organisms.
