How is whooping cough diagnosed?

A
  1. Suspect in a cough lasting over 14 days
  2. Clinically on hearing the protracted cough and whoop
  3. Marked lymphocytosis
  4. Nasal swab and PCR

What is the management for whooping cough?

A
  1. Supportive
  2. Oxygen if hypoxia develops
  3. Clarithromycin to prevent spread and to close contacts as prophylaxis
  4. Admit if <6 months old - increased risk of apnoea.
