What causes pyloric stenosis, when does it present, and which groups is it more common in?

A
  1. Caused by hypertrophy of pyloric muscle
  2. Presents at 3-8 weeks of life.
  3. More common in Caucasians and males.

Forceful, projectile vomiting after feeds (non-bilious), constipation. Hungry, dehydrated, malnourished baby.

How is pyloric stenosis diagnosed?

A
  1. Peristaltic waves seen travelling across abdomen during feed
  2. Firm olive sized pass in epigastric area
  3. Hypokalaemic, hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis
  4. Raised bicarbonate
  5. Confirmed on abdominal USS
