  1. Genetic - Down’s, fragile X, metabolic
  2. Congenital brain abnormalities - hydrocephalus, microcephaly
  3. Prenatal - drugs, alcohol, congenital infection
  4. Perinatal - IVH, birth asphyxia, kernicterus, hypoglycaemia
  5. Postnatal - head injury, meningitis, encephalitis, hypoglycaemia
