When do neonatal seizures commonly occur?
A
24-48 hours after birth

What are the causes of neonatal seizures?
A
- Hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy
- Infection (meningitis, encephalitis)
- Intracranial haemorrhage
- Structural CNS lesions
- Metabolic disturbance (glucose, Na+, K+, Mg2+)
- Neonatal withdrawn from maternal drugs
- Kernicterus
- Idiopathic (benign 5th day fits)

What is the management for neonatal seizures?
A
- ABCDE - turn on side
- Rule out/treat reversible causes
- Empirical antibiotics
- IV access - FBC, U&Es, LFTs, Ca, Mg, glucose, gas
- Consider cranial USS/MRI
- If >5 mins - 1st line phenobarbital, 2nd line phenytoin.
