Glomerulonephritis Flashcards
1
Q
What is this describing?
Inflammation of the glomerular allowing red blood cells and protein to leak into the urine so kidney function is impaired.
A
Glomerulonephritis
2
Q
What are the causes of glomerulonephritis in children?
A
- post-streptococcal (group A)
- IgA nephropathy
- Henoch-Schoenlein purpura
- Anti-GBM disease (Goodpasture’s)
3
Q
What is this a presentation of?

Glomerulonephritis
4
Q
How is glomerulonephritis diagnosed?
A
- urinalysis - RBC casts, dysmorphic RBCs, proteinuria
- U&Es - raised urea and creatinine, low C3
- throat swab or blood test may suggest recent streptococcal infection
- FBC, ANA, anti-dsDNA, ANCA, complement, blood cultures
- biopsy for all causes other than post-streptococcal
5
Q
What is the management glomerulonephritis?
A
- post-streptococcal resolves spontaneously within a couple of weeks
- fluid and salt restriction
- oral penicillin for 10 days
- monitor renal function and blood pressure
- steroids or immunosuppressants for all other causes
