What is scoliosis?

A

Lateral curvature of the thoracic or lumbar spine over 10 degrees.

What is the most common spinal deformity in children, and which gender does it affect more?

A

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (girls|) - curvature increases while the affected person continues to grow so usually early-onset means worse deformity.

How is scoliosis diagnosed?

A

When bending forward a rib hump maybe seen, confirmed by spinal X-ray.

What is the management for scoliosis?

A
  1. Monitor regularly with 6 monthly x-ray to check Cobb angle.
  2. Bracing >20hr/day
  3. Severe - surgery to insert spinal rods

A
