What is the definition of a tall stature?
A
Height that is greater than 2 standard deviations above the mean compared with age and sex, or height that has passed more than 3 centiles above the mid parental height centile.

What are the common causes of a tall stature?
A
- Familial (most common)
- Obesity
- Klinefelter’s, Marfan’s
- Growth hormone excess, hyperthyroidism
- Precocious puberty

How is a tall stature investigated?
A
- BMI
- If clinically well, no investigations.
- Bone age radiology of left hand
- MRI brain if suspecting pituitary adenoma
- Karyotype boys for Klinefelter’s
- Test for Marfan’s if suspicious
