How is meningitis investigated?

A
  1. FBC, CRP, U&Es, LFTs
  2. Blood MCS, whole blood PCR, sputum culture, urine culture
  3. CT for raised ICP if indicated
  4. LP before antibiotics unless raised ICP/septic/coagulopathy

What is the management for meningitis?

A
  1. ABCDE, high flow oxygen
  2. 20ml/kg IV saline boluses, if persists after 2, give blood as third bolus
  3. IV ceftriaxone for over 3 months old
  4. IV cefotaxime and IV amoxicillin if <3 months old
  5. dexamethasone if meningeal signs positive
  6. if viral IV acyclovir

A
  1. DIC, septic shock
  2. skin infarction or gangrene
  3. secondary abscess
  4. hydrocephalus
  5. paralysis
  6. sensorineural hearing loss (give steroids)
  7. reduced IQ
