What is a topic eczema and when do children present with it?

A
  1. Chronic, itchy, inflammatory disease of the skin.

2. 95% by the age of 5, 95% will grow out of it.

What is this a presentation of?

Dry, red and itchy skin. Acutely, red weepy and crusty. Chronically, dry and thickened from frequent scratching.

  1. Begins on face before progressing.
  2. Patches on extensor surfaces of wrists, elbows, ankles, and knees.
  3. Flexures of knees and elbows.

What is the management for a topic eczema?

A
  1. Emollients, avoid soap as they dry skin, three times daily.
  2. Topical steroids for flare-ups (one fingertip enough to treat area to size of the flat of the adult hand)
  3. Apply bandage of a thick layer of emollients help school and hydrate skin
  4. Adjunct UVB phototherapy
