What are the clinical features of measles in the incubation period and how long does it last?
Asymptomatic for 10 days
What are the clinical features of measles in the prodrome phase and how long does it last?
Cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, cranky, fever, malaise, anorexia, Koplik’s spots, last a few days.
What are the clinical features of measles in the rash phase and how long does it last?
Maculopapular brick red blanching rash starting behind ears and spreading down the body, lymphadenopathy, high fever, irritability, miserable, lasts 4-5 days.
What are the clinical features of the recovery phase of measles and how long does it last?
Cough can persist for 2 weeks
How is measles diagnosed?
Clinical signs and symptoms, confirmed by anti-measles antibodies in saliva.
What is the management for measles?
Supportive
What are the complications of measles?
- pneumonia is number one cause of death
- otitis media is the number one complication
- encephalitis, subacute sclerosing paraencephalitis, dystonia, dementia, GI upset, hepatitis, myocarditis, pericarditis.
