A

Common in first 3 years of life, peaking in winter.

Rapid onset of pain, fever, irritability, often after an upper respiratory tract infection; anorexia, vomiting, bulging of the tympanic membrane.

A

Inspection of the tympanic membrane with an otoscope - red and bulging.

What is the management for acute otitis media?

A
  1. Analgesia
  2. Antibiotics if systemically unwell or immunocompromised or no improvement in over 4 days.
  3. Amoxicillin 40mg/kg/d in 3 divided doses for 5 days (macrolide if allergic)
