Pharmocology Flashcards
Asthma & COPD Medications
Order of use:
Use bronchodilators (albuterol)
first to open airways, which improves delivery
of subsequent medications, followed by inhaled
corticosteroids to reduce inflammation.
Timing of administration:
If inhaling the same
medication, wait 1 minute between puffs. If
inhaling different medications, wait 5 minutes
between puffs.
Beta-agonists:
albuterol
formoterol
salmeterol
Beta-agonists are
bronchodilators that commonly cause side
effects of tremors, palpitations, and
tachycardia due to stimulating beta receptors.
Cause SNS stimulation: Assess for cardiovascular conditions and monitor HR, BP, and blood glucose (in diabetic clients).
Theophylline:
Avoid caffeine while taking theophylline because
the combination increases CNS stimulation, which can result in
tachycardia, dysrhythmias, and seizures, and inhibits metabolism
of theophylline, which increases risk for theophylline toxicity.
Anticholinergics
tiotropium
ipratropium
Anticholinergic side effects: Encourage
fluids and sugar-free candy or gum to relieve
dry mouth.
Inhaled
corticosteroids
budesonide
fluticasone
Rinse mouth after each use to prevent
irritation and oral thrush.
Leukotriene
inhibitors
montelukast
Possible psychiatric effects: Monitor for
mood changes and report suicidal thoughts
to HCP.
