Orthopedic Surgeries
Deep vein thrombosis:
Orthopedic surgery is a major risk factor for DVTs. Prevent DVTs by encouraging
early ambulation, applying sequential compression devices (SCDs), and administering prophylactic anticoagulants.
Flexion contractures:
To prevent hip flexion
contractures after lower extremity amputation,
assist the client into a prone position several times a day. Avoid elevating the residual limb on a pillow when lying supine.
Phantom limb pain:
Following amputation,
clients can experience phantom limb pain, which is real pain. Do not remind the client that
the painful part has been amputated, which is
nontherapeutic.
Total hip replacement:
To prevent dislocation after total hip replacement, clients must avoid hip adduction and excessive hip flexion. Teach the client to limit hip flexion by using an elevated toilet seat and putting on shoes using a long-handled assistive device (shoe horn). Limit hip adduction by
using an abduction pillow and avoiding crossing the legs.
Mandibular fracture:
Clients are at risk for aspiration when the jaw is wired shut for maxillary fixation. Keep scissors or wire cutters at the bedside at all times to cut the wires if the client vomits.
