child health Flashcards
Otitis Media, Conjunctivitis, & Strabismus
Otitis media findings:
Fever and ear pain
(tugging at the ears) can indicate otitis media.
Tympanostomy tubes:
Teach caregivers that
tympanostomy tubes are expected to fall out
within 2 years of placement. Notify the HCP when they fall out, but this is not an emergency.
Otitis media prevention:
To prevent otitis
media, avoid exposure to secondhand smoke, and do not prop bottles or let infants
take bottles to bed.
Conjunctivitis:
Bacterial conjunctivitis is
contagious and causes eye redness, purulent
discharge, and crusting. Teach caregivers to use strict hand hygiene and avoid sharing
towels to prevent spread.
Strabismus:
Misalignment of the eyes
(“cross-eyed”)
Transient strabismus is an expected finding in the
first 4 months of life.
To correct strabismus, cover the stronger eye with a patch to strengthen the weaker,
affected eye muscles.
Assessment findings
misalignment
Frequent squinting or head tilting
Double vision (diplopia)
Frequent headaches
Nursing considerations
Report strabismus to the HCP to prevent progression to amblyopia (“lazy eye”).
Amblyopia can cause permanent vision loss in the misaligned eye if not corrected early.
