adult health Flashcards
Parkinson Disease & ALS
Parkinson symptoms:
Key motor signs include resting tremors, muscle rigidity, akinesia, and postural
instability (TRAP).
Promote mobility and prevent falls:
Teach
clients with Parkinson disease techniques to overcome freezing gait (marching in place,
stepping over imaginary lines) and implement fall precautions.
Preventing aspiration and malnutrition:
Clients
with Parkinson disease and ALS are at high risk for aspiration and malnutrition due to dysphagia.
Recommend small, frequent meals with soft or
pureed foods in small bites.
Levodopa-carbidopa:
Instruct clients to avoid
taking levodopa-carbidopa with meals that are high in protein, which can reduce absorption.
ALS complications:
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Clients with ALS are at risk for life-threatening complications like respiratory failure
and aspiration due to progressive muscle weakness affecting breathing and swallowing.
