Organ & Bone Marrow Transplant (6 cards)
Organ rejection:
Notify the HCP for signs of rejection, which include fever and signs of organ failure specific to the transplanted organ, like decreased urine output after kidney transplant or jaundice after liver transplant.
Infection:
Monitoring for infection is a
priority in clients undergoing organ and bone
marrow transplants due to immunosuppresive
therapy.
Notify HCP
of low-grade fever;
a temperature increase of even 1.0°F (0.5°C) above baseline can indicate a life-threatening infection in neutropenic clients.
Neutropenic precautions:
All transplant
clients are at risk for infection due to immunosuppresive therapy. Clients require
neutropenic precautions to prevent infection, including placing the client in a private room with no fresh flowers or raw foods.
Immunosuppressive therapy:
Teach clients
the importance of adherence to lifelong immunosuppressive therapy (cyclosporine,
tacrolimus) to prevent rejection after receiving an
organ transplant. Clients should take medications at the same time each day and avoid sick
contacts and crowds.
Graft-versus-host disease:
Monitor clients with
allogeneic bone marrow transplants for jaundice,
diarrhea, and a pruritic rash on the palms and soles, which are signs of GVHD.
