adult health Flashcards
Neuromuscular Disorders
Myasthenia gravis:
MG muscle weakness worsens after activity and at the end of the day. To manage fatigue, plan activities early in the day and schedule rest periods.
Assessment findings
Guillain-Barre Syndrome
Ascending muscle weakness or paralysis (starts in
legs and spreads upward)
Absent deep tendon reflexes (areflexia)
Respiratory failure (from diaphragm weakness)
Respiratory failure:
Guillain-Barre Syndrome
GBS can cause respiratory
muscle paralysis. Monitor for respiratory failure
and prepare for intubation and ventilatory support.
Pyridostigmine timing:
Administer
pyridostigmine 30 minutes before meals to
improve swallowing.
Cholinergic crisis:
Monitor clients taking
anticholinesterase medications (pyridostigmine) for toxicity (cholinergic crisis), including SLUDGE
symptoms (Salivation, Lacrimation, Urination,
Diarrhea, GI upset, and Emesis).
Multiple sclerosis:
MS relapses are triggered by heat, stress, and infection. Teach clients to prevent
overheating by avoiding hot baths and saunas.
